At least, it's great news for San Francisco and Gavin Newsom, its mayor, who has been implementing PR and financial incentive programs to get more biotech companies to move their offices to the City, instead of the surrounding towns. For those not in the SF area, in the last 5 years, the southern face of SF has changed dramatically with building PacBell Park (where the Giants play) and Mission Bay, a vast complex of business and residential buildings. The supporters of Mission Bay had claimed that it would draw biotech companies to the city and add millions of dollars to the dwindling and needy city coffers. Sadly, no companies had yet taken the plunge, but it was reported that J. David Gladstone Research Institute will be opening its doors there soon. The city is hoping that this is just the first of many other research groups that will come into the area and enliven the new development.
